The Reverend William E. Sanders, recently called as Pastor in the Interim at Church of the Eternal Hills, has come home. Sanders was born at the clinic in Grand Lake. His roots in Grand County are deep. His grandparents lived in Granby and owned W. B. Wright Lumber and Hardware. Sanders' father, Jack Sanders, was the band director at Middle Park High School for many years. In fact, Sanders was baptized as an infant in the old log church in Granby.
Sanders moved with his family to Arvada when he was four and graduated from Arvada High School. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder for two years then transferred to Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash. where he met his wife, Janet, who was from Portland, Ore. After Sanders graduated they moved back to Colorado for two years, then to Southern California for two years, which included two semesters at Fuller Seminary, then two more years in Colorado, before moving to Louisville, Ky. where Sanders graduated from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. They lived in Louisville 28 years. While there, Sanders served several congregations and ministries the past 12 years as a specialist in an Interim capacity.
The Sanders have two sons, Matt who lives with his wife Tara in Louisville, Ky. and Peter and his wife Lauren who are in Chicago where Peter is starting his final year at McCormick Seminary. Sanders' wife, Janet, passed away just a year ago after a courageous battle with cancer.
Rev. Sanders says the call was clenched when the committee at Church of the Eternal Hills agreed to allow his dog Zuri to hang out in the pastor's office. Zuri (which means beautiful in Swahili) is Sanders' “best buddy” and holy mutt, a retriever/shepherd mix, black dog that loves everyone.
Church of the Eternal Hills is active in the Grand County community and Rev. Sanders said he is eager to meet people in the community. Worship services are at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sundays. An adult class is offered every Sunday at 8:15 a.m. Children are welcome at all services. There is a nursery for infants and preschoolers. The church is located at 100 Meadows Blvd, just outside Tabernash.
